GIORGIO A LA ROCHELLE (AQUARIUM) PART2

Posted on Oct 09, 2008 under aquariums | No Comment

New Species on Australian Reefs

Posted on Oct 09, 2008 under reef fish | 25 Comments

ZHANG:
And also in Australia… scientists have discovered hundreds of new coral and marine species on the Great Barrier and Ningaloo Reefs. They say the discovery will help scientists understand more about global warming and over-fishing.

STORY:
Three expeditions to the reefs over four years to collect the first inventory of soft corals, found 300 soft corals of which 130 are new species.

Dozens of new marine species were found, including shrimp-like animals with claws longer than their bodies. They also found less-commonly known animals like a tongue-eating isopod parasite… which eats a fish’s tongue and then lives in its mouth.

Australian Institute of Marine Science research scientist Julian Caley, says researchers never expected to find so many new species. It’ll take years just to name them.

[Julian Caley, Research Scientist]:
“These new species, some are new species which people were, have never seen before because they’re cryptic, they live in environments that people don’t tend to look at.”

The marine inventory will allow better understanding of reef biodiversity and climate change.

Corals face threats ranging from ocean acidification, pollution, and warming, to over-fishing and starfish outbreaks.

The Australian expeditions are part of the global Census of Marine Life, which will release its first global census in the year 2010.

The Snail Song

Posted on Oct 09, 2008 under fish tanks | 10 Comments

This is a music video for a song written, sung and played by Chelsea Lynn La Bate, a songwriter in New York City. The main character in the song and video is a snail who lives in a fish tank in a CEO’s office in midtown Manhattan and has a crush on the guy who comes to clean the fish tank once a week.

The story begins “You only come around on Wednesdays. . .. ” and is inspired by a friend of Chelsea’s who had a job in NYC cleaning tanks and tending to aquatic creatures, some being snails.

Chelsea La Bate, having a back ground in painting, created the imagery and worked with Animator Karin Gunn to do the production work.

She hopes that you enjoy watching this “song story” as much as she enjoyed making it and promises that there are more to come!

45 Gallon Goldfish Aquarium - Fantails, Red Cap Oranda

Posted on Oct 09, 2008 under algae fish | 2 Comments

My 45 gallon aquarium is about 8 years old. There are 3 fantails, 1 red cap oranda, 1 shubunkin, 1 golden algae eater and 1 cory catfish. The catfish is as old as the tank, which amazes me, since they seem to do better in warmer water! When the fish get too large for the tank, I transfer them to my 1900 gallon pond where they have plenty of room and much more fun, I’m sure :) I have an algae problem in the tank periodically, so any suggestions would be welcomed. I do monthly water changes and the PH is neutral. Thanks!
