What can I feel my pleco when aquarium is low on algae?
Posted on Sep 10, 2008 under algae aquarium |I keep a pretty clean tank but at times it gets algae and the pleco quickly gets that under control, but what else can I feed it when there's not much algae?
You can get algae wafers from a petstore, my plecos use to LOVE them. They would also eat off of a cucumber slice or soemthing i put in a orange slice and they ate that.
Plecos are also known to eat any extra food that is on the gravel that your other fish may not have eaten.

They make algae wafers that you can drop in for them. They go crazy over them. My favorite brand is Hikari.

algae wafers, the hikari ones are the best. I feed my pleco's a nightly algae wafer, and they grow like crazy!!! you can also occasionally give them a slice of cucumber, but you'll have to buy a veggie clip for it at petsmart, cause cucumbers float.

They get by. There is left over food at the bottom of the tank if nothing else. Cute aren't they?

You can actually buy Algae wafers at an aquarium or pet store. They also seem to enjoy zucchini. You can cut up a slice and using a vegetable holder from the pet store to put it in a good location for the pleco to munch on. Just remember to remove it if it doesn't eat it all.

Algae pellets, wafers or flakes, bottom feeder tablets, anything you would throw in a green salad they REALLY love zuccini. Just peel it first for them, makes it easier.

I agree with pretty much everyone else…Mine eats algea wafers, and when I don't have those, he just eats the leftover food… I've had him for over a few years, and he's got by fine with mostly left over food

My Plecostomus really like an occasional slice of zucchini,I blanch it in the microwave,(just get the water boiling at a good clip, add a 1/4" slice of zucchini, and cook for about 30 second more, then run cold water over it to stop the cooking.). I use all plastic clips(no metal springs) with suction cups to suspend the squash in the tank. If the fisk do not consume all of the plant in 8 or 10 hours I take it out and throw it away. My livebearers, and some Cichlids also regard this as a treat. Hope this helps,PeeTee

They sell algae disks at the pet store. Some fish will eat them, too (like goldfish).
