What can I feel my pleco when aquarium is low on algae?

Posted on Sep 10, 2008 under algae aquarium | 13 Comments

I keep a pretty clean tank but at times it gets algae and the pleco quickly gets that under control, but what else can I feed it when there's not much algae?

You can get algae wafers from a petstore, my plecos use to LOVE them. They would also eat off of a cucumber slice or soemthing i put in a orange slice and they ate that.

Plecos are also known to eat any extra food that is on the gravel that your other fish may not have eaten.

How can you get rid of algae in an aquarium?

Posted on Sep 09, 2008 under algae aquarium | 13 Comments

contrary to many of the answers here, algae eating fish are never a solution to an algae problem.

you need to ID the type of algae you have, and then treat from there. algae is predominantly caused by excess nutrients and excess light. keeping the nutriants (such as nitrates and phosphates) in check will help suffocate the algae, and keeping the light the tank gets regulated will also help.

algae eating fish will ONLY eat soft algaes. they will not touch green spot algae, blue/green algae (or cyanobacteria, which is actually quite toxic, and not a true algae) and only the siamese algae eater will eat hair algae. algae eating shrimp may make more of a dent such as cherry shrimp and amano shrimp.

you need to treat the root cause of the algae, and not the symptoms.

Week 50 of the tank. Changed the lighting to 20,000K Metal Halides, got a new canopy, traded in the Foxface Rabbitfish for a Six-line Wrasse (The Foxface was mutilating my Coco Worm and soft corals). I’m thinking of switching to 14000K lighting so it isn’t so bluish and getting a taller stand.

how do you get rid of black algae in my aquarium its on my plants what do i do to get rid of it??????

Posted on Sep 08, 2008 under algae aquarium | 6 Comments

am doing everything correct its on my java fern and anubias how can i get rid of it

Black brush algae is a tough one to get rid of. Four suggestions:

1) Remove as many of the infected plant leaves as possible - you can;t really remove the algae without damaging the leaves anyway.

2) Get a Siamese (not Chinese) algae eater. They're the only things that will eat the stuff.

3) It needs nurtient to grow, so do a few good water changes and vacuum the gravel well so all the waste is removed. Since some water companies use phosphate (a plant fertilize) in the pipes to control corrosion, use a phosphate absorbing pad in your filter.

4) Least preferable, but brush algae doesn't seem to like higher pH levels. Add some shell material to your filter or substrate to raise you pH a little (or increase CO2 injection system for the plants if you use one). Do any pH changes slowly because this can affect your plants and fish, as well as your algae.

Light doesn't seem to have as much affect on this as on green algae (brush algaes are a form or red algae).

See the article below about red algae control:
