My 45 gallon aquarium is about 8 years old. There are 3 fantails, 1 red cap oranda, 1 shubunkin, 1 golden algae eater and 1 cory catfish. The catfish is as old as the tank, which amazes me, since they seem to do better in warmer water! When the fish get too large for the tank, I transfer them to my 1900 gallon pond where they have plenty of room and much more fun, I’m sure
I have an algae problem in the tank periodically, so any suggestions would be welcomed. I do monthly water changes and the PH is neutral. Thanks!

I am having a major algae (the green stuff) problem in my fish tank. One of my fish has already died (he was 6 years old). I noticed green in his stomach when I was flushing him down the toilet. What can I do to prevent this from happening to my other fish?
Generally algae isn't harmfull to your fish, in fact many fish actually eat algae as part of their normal diet. But it may be a sign of excess nutrients building up in your tank.
Do extra partial water changes to reduce the nutrient levels and cut down on the light that your tank is getting. These 2 things should reduce the amount of algae, and the extra water changes will help your fish.

A quick video of my ten gallon fish tank. It currently is holding two platys, one gold gourami, one mollie, two painted tetra (powder blue and pink), three painted glassfish (green, orange, and purple), and my favorites; my guppy breeding pair. The mollie, guppies, gourami, and tetra are new to that tank today. I’m not sure if she’s pictured in the video, but near the black filter is Monica, the algae eater (pleco)

I have lots of algae growing in our lake and i need the best ECO friendly way to rid or at least manage this.
Call your County Extension Agent for advise. I know of people using agricultural cornmeal & they swear by it.

Otocinclaus are perfect for this aquarium. If you would prefer a distant secondary recommendation would be a DWARF Bristlenose plecostomous though I would really rather you go with the Otocinclaus. Depending on the level of lighting you have in the aquarium you may need upto 5 though with a basic single bulb strip light 2 should be fine.
