Can i put turtles in a regular fish aquarium?

Posted on Sep 11, 2008 under aquarium fish | 8 Comments

not WITH the fish, but in an aquarium built for fish.
I know you only fill it 1/2 way so i would need to get a turtle filter.

but can i do this?

I depends on what kind of turtle you have and how large the tank is.

Box turtles from this country should be kept in a mostly land setup as they cannot swim and do not go into the water although they do need to drink some.

For aquatic turtles (such as painted turtles and red eared sliders) you need at least 10 *GALLONS* of water for each *INCH* of shell. A one year old RES with a six inch shell needs at minimum 60 gallons of water, two of them would require 120gallons. Turtles will *NOT* stay small if kept in a small tank-that logic only works for goldfish…barely… The only way to keep a turtle small is to starve it, and anyone who tries to do so should be arrested and thrown in jail for animal cruelty. Each turtle should be fed good commercial pellets like Reptomin in a volume equal to that of their head at each meal (2x a day for babies <3", 1x for ~3-6", and every other day for older turtles). The pellets should be supplemented by fruits, veggies, and live food (not goldfish-they will slowly poison turtles).

Aquatic turtles (except for some very unusual ones like matamatas that don't really swim) should have water as deep as the tank will allow as long as the turtle can't climb out of the tank from it's basking spot or from the water's surface. My turtles (RES) have water about two *feet* deep. Water that is less than 1.5-2 times the depth of the length of the turtle's shell will prevent it from righting itself if it ends up upside down.

Some people use large plastic tubs (the ones without wheels) to house turtles as they don't cost much but can hold a very large amount of water.

As far as filters go, get one rated for at least 3x the amount of water used-canister filters work the best but are pricey. Turtles are extremely messy animals and foul water quickly. On the plus side, unlike fish you don't have to condition/age the water before using it (unless there are contaminants like heavy metals in the water). The chlorine/chloramine in the water isn't an issue for most turtles like it is for fish.

Some advice on starting a marine fish aquarium?

Posted on Sep 10, 2008 under aquarium fish | 2 Comments

I'm thinking of getting and raising a saltwater aquarium. I'm a beginner so I'm just wondering what are some fish I should start out with, as well as algae eaters and shrimp and whatnot.

Also, could just give me some general information about saltwater aquariums, like changing the water, cleaning the tank, and some good filters.

Thanks. =]

Water changes are pretty much the same as in freshwater exept for the salt. You need to condition your tap water to remove chlorine and other things, then mix your salt to a specific gravity of 1.020-1.026 (done with a hydrometer wich is pretty cheap and easy to use) heat, and aerate the water for at least 24 hours and add it to your tank. Cleaning the tank includes scraping algae from the glass, siphoning poop and uneaten food from the ground, and cleaning your tank equiptment wich you will need to know of anyway so i will list them for you: filter, protien skimmer, heater, and decorations. As far as filters I would recomend a large powerfilter for a tank smaller than 40 gallons. And a canister filter for anything larger. In a quarantine tank (small tank used to check for disease before you put fish into main aquarium) you could use a sponge filter, box filter, or a small powerfilter. Remora brand protien skimmers usually work pretty well. Starting Fish: everyone reccomends damsels but they are very terretorial and i dont like them, however they are no question the hardiest species of saltwater fish. I like to use clownfish as a first fish because they are hardy, beautiful, and get along with other fish. wait to add fish like tangs and angels until your tank has been running for a while and has been relatively stable with water parameters. I recomend using live rock in your aquarium because it helps with filtration and gives fish a place to browse for food. Skunk Cleaner Shrimp, Emerald Crabs, and Scarlet Legged Hermit crabs are my favorite invertebrates for any marine tank. I hope i covered everything Good Luck with your tank!

I am not able to manage a fish aquarium, can someone help?

Posted on Sep 09, 2008 under aquarium fish | 6 Comments

How to make and maintain a fish aquarium?

Here's the basics to maintaining a tank: you have to do is get the fish, feed the fish according to the intructions on the feed, clean the tank when it gets filthy by putting your fish in a bucket and changing the water and wiping the tank and cleaning any decorations you have (monthly or weekly), and if your fish ever get sick, do some research. It's less trouble than having to drive to the vet. After researching just buy the medicine from a pet store. If you seriously can't find the disease then go to the vet. That's all you really need to know. Oh, don't forget to buy water conditioner because fish can't live in regular tap water. When you clean out the tank remember to add the water conditioner to the water. Plus, you should always have a net so you can catch them when you need to (for example, when you want to move your fish to a bucket so you can clean the tank) Also, you should make sure the water temperature is right for the fish. In that case, you should get a special thermometer which you can stick at the side of the tank. If your fish are supposed to live in warm water, get a heater. Plus, a filter is very important. I've heard that it keeps the fish alive (because some fish need water that is constantly in motion.) and it helps keep the tank somewhat clean. So, that's the basics. Hope you can manage. My suggestion is that you get goldfish. They prefer cold water so you can just use cold tap water treated by water conditioner. I know all this from experience. : ) I used to have 6 goldfish.

What's a good website/message board for aquarium/tropical fish enthusiasts?

Posted on Sep 08, 2008 under aquarium fish | 7 Comments

Are there any big online tropical fish/aquarium communities or websites out there? I'm just looking for info on fish species, grouping, tank set up, products, tips, etc. I would love to scope out a message board or forum for like-minded enthusiasts.

www.flippersandfins.net

There are great articles, do-it-yourself projects and tips, and even a doctor on board to help in the event you have illness or problems. And everyone on there is as friendly and helpful as they possibly can be.
