GIORGIO A LA ROCHELLE (AQUARIUM) PART2

Posted on Oct 09, 2008 under aquariums | No Comment

Posted on Sep 11, 2008 under aquariums | 4 Comments

trying to control a rampant snail population in a fresh water aquarium, as they're eating all the live plants, any suggestions as to what will eat their eggs or protect the plants would be appreciated.

try had-a-snail. you dont want any snails in there if you have a planted tank.

What kind of plants do you use in freshwater aquariums?

Posted on Sep 10, 2008 under aquariums | 3 Comments

I was told that live plants will help reduce the nitrates/nitrites in my goldfishes' aquarium (10 gall.-just two little goldfish). Which plants should I start with and how do I tend to them? Thank you!
I already have plastic plants for esthetic reasons, but I really think I need the live plants because I can't get my nitrate/nitrite/ammonia levels down no matter what I do, and I am losing fish.

Live plants do not do well with goldfish as they will tear them up by the roots and potentialy destroy them entirely. The only live plants that may work with goldfish are some of the aquarium mosses such as taiwian moss and java moss.

You say you have two "little" goldfish in a ten gallon? If you don't know already I must inform you that these "little" goldfish will soon be very large and will require a 15-20 gal for one of them. For two you would be much better off with a 30 gal minumum. They will be OK in the ten gal for a little while, but not long because they grow very quickly and if you leave them in the tank while they grow it could stunt their growth wich is very unhealthy for the fish.

Octopus Getting Shrimp in Jar

Posted on Sep 09, 2008 under aquariums | 2 Comments

Extremely intelligent, this octopus is getting enrichment trying to get shrimp out of plastic jar with small holes drilled in sides. Halfway through, the tentacles are visible inside the jar. Water surface is on left side.
Enrichment, regarding animals at zoos and aquariums, includes anything that keepers do or add into an animal’s enclosure that is new or different than usual, even including scents.

How do I lower or maintain my saltwater aquariums nitrate level to 0?

Posted on Sep 09, 2008 under aquariums | 8 Comments

I have a 20 gal saltwater aquarium. Amonia 0, Nitrite 0, but Nitrate seems to be always pegged between 40-80 even if I make 25%/partial water change. I have a clam, cleaner shrimp and several types of corals which seem to like the condition. The fish though does not last long. How do I solve this?

Sounds like you need to make your partial water changes more often. If you increase these changes and it still doesn't go down, and you are using tap water, than you should test the tap water for nitrates. If you have them in your water you need to start using bottled or R/O. They do sell filter media's which help absorb nitrates, though I would try to fix it at the source first. Also, keep the number of fish to a minimum since this is a very small tank - just a couple.
