How can you keep your fish alive without feeding it?

Posted on Sep 11, 2008 under feeding fish | 13 Comments

I have a science project where you have to keep a fish in a jar sealed with duct tape…I know you can put plants in to provide oxygen but how do you feed it?

The theory is that the plant will grow, provide oxygen and food for the fish.

But the normal outcome is that the fish just dies after a while. Hopefully you get the project marked before this happens.

You may be able to get it to work for a while using a shrimp and growing algae, which the shrimp can eat.

will feeding feeder fish to my albino oscar make him too aggressive?

Posted on Sep 09, 2008 under feeding fish | 7 Comments

great advice on the feeder fish and its risks, i will stay away from using them..

Oscar will usually eat anything that is small enough to get in his mouth and many species of cichlids are naturally aggressive. So feeding feeder fish will not necessarily have any effect on his aggression, if he is around small fish he will probably eat them, if there is a fish in his territory he will probably act aggressive regardless.

however, feeder fish are pretty low in nutrition and can introduce disease and parasites, so you may not want to feed them to your oscar. You could try crickets or worms, tubiflex and bloodworms, oscars won't refuse many things.

I am going on vacation for 5 days and need to know what I should do about feeding my fish.?

Posted on Sep 08, 2008 under feeding fish | 12 Comments

I am trying to avoid having my brother in law come over once a day to feed my fish while on vacation. But what are my options? I have read that you can let your fish go for a few days without food, but I really don't feel comfortable with that. Also read about the vacation feeders, do they work? Will they mess up my levels in the aquarium? I have a well established & planted 10 gallon aquarium with 5 guppies, 2 Otocinclus cats, and 1 balloon molly. I can't afford to buy one of the timed feeders. We only take like 1 vacation a year so it would not be that great of an investment. Any suggestions?

I would get one of those vacation feeders for now but you might want to invest in an automatic feeder in the future. You can find automatic feeders at the link below
