Yes I think they are pretty much a must have item because you really need to test your tank and be sure of your levels….they sell them at pretty much any store that has pet supplies…I would never be without them
My D.I.Y. entry into the world of fishkeeping. Footage taken roughly 1 year after i (with help) built the tank.

I don't know why all these people are telling you live plants. If you're new to fish keeping, use just plastic plants. The plants are only slightly less confusing to deal with at first in comparison the fish, and you don't want to be dealing with both confusions at the same time. As for the fish: one inch of fish per gallon. Its really really tempting to go crazy and get way too many fish, but then the tank will be filthy. So do your best to restrain yourself and limit yourself to some small fish. 4 or 5 guppies, or tetras. 3 or 4 platys or mollys or other midsize fish. Or maybe two Gouramis?
Three pink convicts, 4 black neons, a dwarf gourami, 2 cories and a mystery catfish. I think you see everyone…

If i boil them first?
Using sea shells in a fresh water aquarium will harden the water and raise the pH level, so unless you only use a couple of small ones in a large tank, I would advise against it. Also be careful what type of rock you are using for reasons similar to this, plus they can leach toxins into the water or harbor parasites. I once lost 90% of a tank population to the last one.
this tank houses many fish (harlequins, rummy noses, snail, bristle nose, neon, fire tail, coolies.sunken pirate ship in the bottom of my fish tank.
