How often do you have to clean a 10 gallon fish tank?

Posted on Sep 07, 2008 under gallon fish | 5 Comments

In the 10 gallon fish tank i have 9 guppies & 1 Plecostomus. With plants & a power filter. And how do i properly clean it?

Changing all the water and cleaning the filter/s and the sides of the tank every two weeks will kill the good bacteria, damage the natural cycle and restart it again causing danger of raise in ammonia and the killing of the fish.

Weekly 30% water changes, avoiding over stocking and over feeding will keep the tank stable.

Cleaning of filters need to be carried on long terms (6 months) and avoide doing the cleaning of filters and changing the media the same time withh complete water change. Filter media to be cleaned in the tank old water.

Discus require 10 gallons per adult and please please please! do not buy Discus if you have only kept fish for a year or 2!

If you want your Discus to grow to the maximum size, Please do not plant your tank. Have a BB(Bare Bottom) tank

Can a red parrot fish live in a 20 gallon tank?

Posted on Sep 04, 2008 under gallon fish | 6 Comments

I have a 20 gallon fish tank which I just finished cycling and now I am trying to find a fish or a community of fish that's best for it.
I was thinking a dwarf gourami before and neon tetras but then I saw this red parrot fish and they are so cute. I know they grew huge and they won't be all happy in a 20 gallon tank. But I was thinking if maybe I can fit 1-2 and then add 2-3 more dwarf gouramis and maybe 5-6 tetras. Are they compatible with each other? overstocked?
I would very much appreciate if you can suggest how many and what kind of fish I can put in and also live plants too. Thanks!

Tankmates
Should you choose to purchase one, care should be taken when choosing tank mates. They should not be kept with aggressive fish, as they are not well equipped to compete for food or turf in the aquarium. Owners have kept them successfully in community tanks with a variety of peaceful fish. Mid sized tetras, danios, angelfish, and catfish are all good possible tank mates.

Habitat
Their habitat should be roomy and provide plenty of hiding places, so they can set up their own territory. Rocks, driftwood, and clay pots on their sides are good options. Like other cichlids they will dig in the gravel, so choose a substrate that is not too rough. Temperature should be maintained at about 80. Lower temperatures will result in the loss of color. The pH should be 6.8, and the water soft. Lighting should be subdued. Water changes should be performed twice a month.

Diet
Blood Parrots will eat a variety of foods including flake, live, frozen, and freeze dried foods. Sinking foods are easier for them to eat than floating foods. Most owners report bloodworms and live brine shrimp as a favorite treat. Foods high in b-carotene and canthaxanthin will help maintain their vibrant colors.

Good luck!

What do I need to start a 5 gallon fish tank for my to small children?

Posted on Sep 03, 2008 under gallon fish | 7 Comments

I have a 3 & 2 year old & they love fish so I thought that I would get a 5 gallon fish tank for them, but I am not sure what all I need to get it started.

Actually, I would start out with a 10 gallon setup kit available at any large retailer for about $30-$35. In the long run it won't cost much more than piecing a 5 gallon tank together and your fish will be happier. Additionally, you'll be able to get a few more of the buggers in there. Be sure to select fish that will stay small, swordtails and platties, and mollies would be great starter fish, but no more than 2-3 of each (6-9) total. You could even add a lone catfish or two.
