New Species on Australian Reefs

Posted on Oct 09, 2008 under reef fish | 25 Comments

ZHANG:
And also in Australia… scientists have discovered hundreds of new coral and marine species on the Great Barrier and Ningaloo Reefs. They say the discovery will help scientists understand more about global warming and over-fishing.

STORY:
Three expeditions to the reefs over four years to collect the first inventory of soft corals, found 300 soft corals of which 130 are new species.

Dozens of new marine species were found, including shrimp-like animals with claws longer than their bodies. They also found less-commonly known animals like a tongue-eating isopod parasite… which eats a fish’s tongue and then lives in its mouth.

Australian Institute of Marine Science research scientist Julian Caley, says researchers never expected to find so many new species. It’ll take years just to name them.

[Julian Caley, Research Scientist]:
“These new species, some are new species which people were, have never seen before because they’re cryptic, they live in environments that people don’t tend to look at.”

The marine inventory will allow better understanding of reef biodiversity and climate change.

Corals face threats ranging from ocean acidification, pollution, and warming, to over-fishing and starfish outbreaks.

The Australian expeditions are part of the global Census of Marine Life, which will release its first global census in the year 2010.

How do i catch a fish in an established reef tank?

Posted on Sep 10, 2008 under reef fish | 5 Comments

I cannot remove the rocks because of the attached corals.

Corals can be decently hardy in an established tank. You might need to move the rock if the fish really needs to be taken out that badly.
If that's just not an option, try adding a couple extra hands. Get some buddies or family to come over with some extra nets and work on it together. Make sure everyone washes their hands before and after putting them in the tank!
If you have time on your hands, try making a trap. Take a large, clear cup, and put a hole through the top on both sides. Secure a string through that, using unscented dental floss or fishing string. Put the cup in the water on its side, then put some stong smelling fish food in it, like some shrimp or frozen food. Wait until the fish goes inside the cup, then yank your butt off. It might take a couple tries, and a lot of patience, but it's worked before.
Hope that helps!

Is lace rock safe for a saltwater aqaurium, we have fish and reef set up?

Posted on Sep 09, 2008 under reef fish | 2 Comments

If this is the same rock sold as lace rock at my local stores it is safe. This is just a calcium carbonate rock that's porous with some rather large holes, so it's made of similar material as the limestones that form in deepwater environments.

I recomend things like lace and dry reef rock to use at the base of rockwork for marine tanks because it's less expensive, then stacking good quality live rock on the top and in front. The organisms that can survive without as intense of light will eventually colonize the dry rock (as will the nitrifying bacteria), and you don't have the cost or die-off of using live rock throughout.

Reef fish tank trouble?

Posted on Sep 08, 2008 under reef fish | 5 Comments

My 180 Reef tank was contaminated with bate water. Appx 50 Galons from my Jacuzi tub in the floor above. Lost all Fish. What should I do???
Not backup tank. appx 150 lbs ov live rock with leathers polyps and lots of turbo's. Do I need to wash the base gravel?

I personally would look into setting up some newly made salt water that is set to your tanks peramiters and rinse them off and hold them there till I could find a friend to hold them for me in a better setup until I setup the main tank again. That way you may have saved them from the bad bath water. Whatever you cannot put in different tubs of water can be cleaned and scrubbed down and reused as base rock. The main thing is to try and keep the rock moist. Clean up the tank really good, and see if a friend can give you some filters to help you re-establish your tank.
