How can you keep your fish alive without feeding it?

Posted on Sep 11, 2008 under feeding fish |

I have a science project where you have to keep a fish in a jar sealed with duct tape…I know you can put plants in to provide oxygen but how do you feed it?

The theory is that the plant will grow, provide oxygen and food for the fish.

But the normal outcome is that the fish just dies after a while. Hopefully you get the project marked before this happens.

You may be able to get it to work for a while using a shrimp and growing algae, which the shrimp can eat.

Find out what the fish's natural food source would be if it was in its natural habitat and put that in the jar. it will probably a plant as the school will not let you starve a fish to death, that would be animal cruelty.

No mean to be disrespectful but there is no real way to keep a fish alive without feeding it UNLESS you have something in the fishbowl that feeding the fish automatically. IMPOSSIBLE IS WhAT I CALL IT!!!

    Did you choose this project?
Because I don't think you can't really feed it.

I read about something like this, it sounds like when people tried putting fish in a ecosphere. The fish never survived because the ammonia was way too high and there was no quick way to get rid of it.

To put it simply, The fish will not survive in a jar.

    Edit:
By the way, this is an ecosphere

    thats so mean!
…. and i dont think its possible unless you're allowed to put one of those 7-day food pellets in there in advance.

I m sorry I do not think you put your questions in the right section, we are fish lovers not fish torturers. If it is scientific put it to your instructor.

why did you choose this it will only kill the fish anyway the only fish that you can use for that project is a betta NO other fish or else they will die in no more than 12 hours. bettas can in small space andlive without no oxygen but they still need air and to do this just poke a big enough hole for the betta to breath. fish can go for about a week without eating really but longer than this may kill them. just remember you can only use a betta for this kind of thing no guppy no goldfish no shark

that project is sick and cruel. what kind of fish are you keeping in there? DO NOT DO BETTAS OR GOURAMIS!! they will die from lack of oxygen b/cuz they are labrynth fish. if you absolutely MUST do that horrid project, a herbivorous fish would eat the plants or algae growing but you can't keep any fish in a jar, not enough space. you will need a lot of plants to produce enough oxygen and support the fish for feeding. one or two otos would be best, even though they do not want to be used for disgusting mean science projects and they like schools and they like heated water. they will eat algae and maybe the plant leaves. but if your using a jar forget it because otos need 10g+, so do all other herbivorous fish. if you have to use a jar, you can support a few snails but that is all. plz don't kill innocent fish. :(

and lizardlo is right, this is the fish LOVERS section, not the fish KILLERS section. who's idea was this project???

Hi, I agree that this project is every cruel. Most of the time the fish do die. Ask your teacher if there is any other project you can do and explain to them why you want to change projects.

I've worked with schools that have done projects like this. They are generally projects that last only a week or two some times a month. Those kids that have gotten the fish through it did the following. They to use a 1 or 2 gallon jar. Some live aquatic plants. Some sand or gravel and aged water from a tank that was already set up. Next put the fish into the jar. Then put the jar in or near a sunny window that gets some sun, but not late afternoon sun. The sun light will help the plant and algae to grow. Good luck with your project.

Well If you can choose the fish I would recommend the betta. When you put the duct tape on the jar Leave a small gap in it ( about 1/16 th in. Set the jar in a window where it will get good sun ( at least 4 hours a day). Algae will form in the water and it will provide both food and air for the fish. You want to leave the gap so that you can add small amounts of fresh water occasionally.
I know this works because I did it myself (as an experiment) and wrote a paper on it. My experiment lasted four months and I never feed it anything the whole time.
I used the betta because its natural habitat is in the rice paddies of Asia where the water becomes stagnant and moss ridden, that is why they can breath air from the surface. ( Hence the name Anabantoid - air breathing)
    Luck with your experiment.

Did a four month study on the effects of fishes living in the rice paddies of Asia. Got an A+ too.

Buy a vacation feeder at your local fish store and place it in the jar before sealing it. Vacation feeders generally cost about $1 or $2.
