    how big’s your tank …
how big’s your tank? the fx5 is awesome, highly recommended for those on a budget- alternatives are to go with a couple of the smaller flow eheims(classic of pro II) which are a similar price to the fx5 or one of the eheim pro III 2080(they look awesome but cost more than double that of the fx5!). heard good things about hagen fluval’s after sales service too… go the fx5!

reply to SpArKyEt. well maybe those figures a pretty off but the fact remains: over-filtrationis better than under-filtration. if you have a highly stocked or are keeping big fish, you will need to circulate the water a couple of times and hour at least to maintain good water quality. Sinkthefrog only has 3 fish in his 200gal tank. many filter brands overstate the flow rate and when full of media the filters flow is even further reduced. used a 500gph filter on 90gal tank and was insufficient!

I’m not sure what this comment was in response to, however, this guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Find me a filter that does 1500-2000 gph that isn’t made for 1000+ gallon aquariums.

    80% might be too …
80% might be too much of a water change, might be getting rid of too much of the good bacteria. i had heaps of water quality issues when i first started cos i didnt cycle my tank properly and my filter was not doing the job properly. do a 10%-30% change every fortnight and make sure your filter is working well enough, should cycle the water about 4-6 times every hour- eg 200 gal tank= 1500-2000gph filtration. hope this helps!

It is nice to see someone using an appropriate size tank for a fish that large. Good job brother and nice set up.

    Yea it should clear …
Yea it should clear it up, that’s the only filter I use on my 200 gallon. It’s ready to go out of the box, you just have to cut the tubing yourself.

  14. SpArKyEt Says:

    ok if i buy the fx5 …
ok if i buy the fx5, its ready to go out the box? or will i need anything extra? i mean you think that will fix my cloudy water problem?

  15. Sinkthefrog Says:

    I do about 30-40% …
I do about 30-40% usually. I try to do it once a week but sometimes it goes a little bit longer. The FX5 is really good, I’ve seen a couple setups on the net of them with home made input/outputs. I don’t know the exact sizes, but supposedly PvC pipes fit on it perfectly, and you can cut grooves in the pipes for better flow. I haven’t done that mostly for looks.

  16. SpArKyEt Says:

    so when you do …
so when you do water change, how much % do you change? and you do that every week too?

  17. SpArKyEt Says:

    man thats what i …
man thats what i almost seem to be doing. i bought the best gravel vacuum also and about every two weeks i’ll do about 80% water change and clean gravel then not even two weeks the water gets real cloudy again. but my fish are real healthy and growing big but i hate all this maintance. thats why i seen your 200 gallon and your water looked so clear im thinking i need a new better filter too.

  18. Sinkthefrog Says:

    You should still do …
You should still do weeklly water changes, it helps replenish stuff that is removed by the filtration like certain trace elements. The flow on the FX5 seems kind of weak though. I run two powerheads also just as water pumps to keep the circulation up.

  19. SpArKyEt Says:

    yea i lokked up …
yea i lokked up that fluval fx5 filter on the net its looks good. 607 gallons of water every hour. thanks because i have 200 gallon tank with 2 power filters the hang on type and they suck. imma going to get fx5! how often have you had to do water since with your filter???
