45 Gallon Goldfish Aquarium - Fantails, Red Cap Oranda

Posted on Oct 09, 2008 under algae fish | 2 Comments

My 45 gallon aquarium is about 8 years old. There are 3 fantails, 1 red cap oranda, 1 shubunkin, 1 golden algae eater and 1 cory catfish. The catfish is as old as the tank, which amazes me, since they seem to do better in warmer water! When the fish get too large for the tank, I transfer them to my 1900 gallon pond where they have plenty of room and much more fun, I’m sure :) I have an algae problem in the tank periodically, so any suggestions would be welcomed. I do monthly water changes and the PH is neutral. Thanks!

Seaweeds of the NW Gulf of Mexico

Posted on Oct 09, 2008 under marine algae | No Comment

Film footage taken with a SONSUB ROV on board the R/V Ron Brown during the 2003 NOAA Ocean Exploration expedition to the northwestern Gulf of Mexico was kindly provided by Emma Hickerson, PI (Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary).

Edited film segments highlight the topography of unconsolidated rubble and rhodoliths (round carbonate nodules surrounded by crust-forming red algae) that support a lush and diversity-rich marine macroalgal flora at 45-90 m depth.

Collected seaweed specimens are deposited in the seaweed laboratory of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

Rotifera: A visual celebration of the smallest animals

Posted on Sep 10, 2008 under pond algae | 19 Comments

Rotifera are tiny multicellular animals that are an amazingly important part of the food chain in most aquatic environments. They are the stepping stone in that food chain between bacteria and tiny algae particles and larger creatures, like insect larvae or filter feeders like ducks. Even being so small, they have eyes, a complete digestive system, and even a brain consisting of fifteen cells. Without these amazingly tiny wonders, the ecology webs of the world would collapse.
