45 Gallon Goldfish Aquarium - Fantails, Red Cap Oranda

Posted on Oct 09, 2008 under algae fish | 2 Comments

My 45 gallon aquarium is about 8 years old. There are 3 fantails, 1 red cap oranda, 1 shubunkin, 1 golden algae eater and 1 cory catfish. The catfish is as old as the tank, which amazes me, since they seem to do better in warmer water! When the fish get too large for the tank, I transfer them to my 1900 gallon pond where they have plenty of room and much more fun, I’m sure :) I have an algae problem in the tank periodically, so any suggestions would be welcomed. I do monthly water changes and the PH is neutral. Thanks!

otocinclus species

Posted on Sep 06, 2008 under algae fish | 4 Comments

Here is a really random video of one of my oto cats grazing algae on the front glass of my old 20 gallon tank.

This video is kind of boring, but I guess good to show how otocinclus sp. eat.

They prefer soft algae. Supplement with an assortment with vegetables and fruits. They usually will only start grazing on vegetables after 2-3 days when it has decomposed and softened up.

Their diet should consist primarily of vegetation. However, they do snack on the occasional meatier foods like shrimp pellets that are higher in protein. Do not feed too much high protein foods though.

Very easy to take care of, make sure you have soft, slightly acidic to neutral water. They prefer to be in groups, the larger the better, even though they do not swim together all the time.

I recommend three together at a minimum. When alone, they will tend to waste away.

Very productive eaters of certain kinds of algae (brown diatoms, hair algae).

A wild Pleco at lake Calaveras, TX.

Posted on Sep 04, 2008 under algae fish | 25 Comments

This is a video of a Plecostomus also known as a “SUCKER FISH”. Most people like to put these fish in their aquariums and ponds. What most people don’t know is that it will grow up to be a 7 pound fish no matter what size tank you have, These fish are very strong muscle wise but can not tollerate the cold. If you have a small pond, I suggest you get at least a 50 gallon tank to keep your Pleco in over the cold winter months. Take them out at the first sign of cold weather.
